Two jobs in one object
Almost every misunderstanding about car keys comes from treating them as a single item with a single price. They are not. A modern vehicle key is two separate pieces of work bonded into one lump of plastic, and they are done on different machines, take different amounts of time, and fail independently of one another.
The first job is mechanical. Something has to physically fit the vehicle — a blade cut to the correct pattern so the door lock, the ignition or the glovebox accepts and turns it. This is metalwork, done on a cutting machine, and it is quick.
The second job is electronic. Something has to convince the vehicle that this key is allowed to start it. That is the immobiliser, and satisfying it means programming a chip so the car's own system recognises it. This is a data operation performed through the vehicle, with equipment and a procedure that varies by manufacturer, model and year.
Once you hold those two halves apart in your head, everything else on this page follows — including why a key can turn perfectly and the engine still refuse, why the second key is always cheaper than the first, and why "how much for a car key" cannot be answered before somebody knows what you drive.
Edge cut and laser cut blades
The mechanical half comes in two families, and you can identify yours by looking at the blade.
Edge cut is the traditional pattern — a series of notches along one or both outer edges of the blade, the same silhouette as a house key. The cuts lift wafers or pins inside the lock to a shear line, and the key only turns when they all align. These blades are thinner, and they are cut on a machine that traces or follows a defined set of depth and spacing positions.
Laser cut — also called internal cut, sidewinder, or high security depending on who is talking — has a winding channel milled along the flat faces of the blade rather than notches on its edges. The blade is thicker, symmetrical, and typically goes into the lock either way up. It requires a different machine with a milling cutter rather than an edge cutter, and it is cut to tighter tolerances.
The distinction matters for two reasons. First, capability: a shop with only an edge cutter cannot produce a laser key, which is why some vehicles are handled easily in one place and not at all in another. Second, tolerance: laser blades are less forgiving of wear and of sloppy duplication, so a poor copy of a laser key is more likely to fail in the ignition even though it operates the door.
Transponders, remote heads and proximity fobs
The electronic half also comes in tiers, and knowing which you have sets expectations for everything else.
Transponder key. A cut blade with a chip embedded in the plastic head. There are no buttons. When the key is in the ignition, a coil around the lock energises the chip, which answers with its identity. If the answer is not on the vehicle's accepted list, the immobiliser blocks the engine from running. This is the origin of the classic symptom: the key turns, the starter may even crank, and the engine will not stay running. Nothing mechanical is wrong. The car does not believe you.
Remote head key. The same idea with lock, unlock and often boot or panic buttons built into the head, and a battery. Two systems in one body: the transponder for starting, and a separate radio remote for the doors. They can fail independently — a dead battery kills the buttons while the car still starts fine, because the transponder is passive and needs no battery.
Proximity fob. Keyless entry and push-button start. The blade is not used in normal driving; it lives hidden inside the fob as an emergency blade for a dead fob battery or a dead vehicle battery. The car detects the fob nearby, unlocks on a handle touch, and authorises a start. Proximity systems involve more parts, and there are more ways for them to go wrong — battery, antenna, or the vehicle simply not seeing the fob where it is sitting.
All three can also fail for reasons that are not the key at all. A worn ignition lock, a failed immobiliser antenna ring, or a weak vehicle battery all produce symptoms that look exactly like a bad key, and the correct first step is diagnosis rather than ordering parts.
All keys lost versus adding a spare
This is the most consequential distinction on the page, and the one that explains the widest price spread.
Adding a spare means you have at least one working key in hand. The vehicle can be started, the existing key can often be used to enter a programming state, and the blade can be duplicated or cut to code. On many vehicles this is a comparatively short procedure.
All keys lost means there is no working key anywhere. Now every step has to be built from nothing. The blade has to be originated — produced from the vehicle's own key specification, or from the lock itself, since there is no sample to copy. Then the vehicle has to be persuaded to accept a first key with no existing key to authorise the process, which on many systems is a longer procedure with waiting periods deliberately built in by the manufacturer to make exactly this difficult. On some models it requires access to security data that is only released through defined channels, and on a subset of vehicles it is genuinely dealer-only work.
That gap — between a job with a working key present and the same job without — is not a markup. It is a different job. And it is the whole reason for the single most useful piece of advice in automotive locksmithing: get the second key made while the first one still works. A spare cut and programmed on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in Navarre is a fraction of the cost, and none of the stress, of an all-keys-lost job in a car park at night. If your vehicle currently has exactly one key, that is a scheduled task, not an emergency.
Cut to code versus copying the key in your pocket
There are two ways to produce a blade, and they are not equivalent.
Copying traces the key you hand over and reproduces its current shape. The virtue is speed. The flaw is that it faithfully reproduces wear. A key that has been in a pocket for years has rounded shoulders and shallowed cuts — brass is soft and every insertion abrades it slightly. Copy that and you have a duplicate of a worn key, which may work the door and fail the ignition, because the ignition lock is the tightest and most used lock on the vehicle. Copy a copy and the error compounds.
Cutting to code produces the blade from the vehicle's original specification — the defined depths and spaces the key was supposed to have when new — rather than from a worn sample. The result is a correct key regardless of the state of the one in your hand. It is the right answer when the existing key is old, when the ignition has become fussy, when a previous copy did not work properly, and always in an all-keys-lost situation where there is no sample at all.
There is a diagnostic buried in this. If your key has to be wiggled, jiggled, held at an angle or pushed in and pulled back slightly before it will turn, do not copy it. That technique you have unconsciously developed is the sign of a worn key, and worn keys wear the lock in turn — the rounded key drags the wafers across the shear line instead of lifting them cleanly, reshaping the cylinder to tolerate a bad key until it will not accept a good one. Cutting to code at that stage saves the ignition lock. Copying at that stage guarantees you will replace it.
What can be done at the roadside and what cannot
Honesty is more useful here than optimism, so here is the split as it really is.
Commonly handled on site: cutting a replacement blade for a wide range of vehicles, including many laser cut ones, with mobile cutting equipment; programming spare transponder keys, remote heads and many proximity fobs where the system allows it; all-keys-lost work on a large proportion of vehicles; opening a locked vehicle so the keys inside can be retrieved; diagnosing whether the problem is actually the key or something else.
Frequently dealer territory: certain manufacturers and certain model years restrict the security data required to originate a first key, and some systems require a manufacturer connection to add credentials at all. Certain proximity systems on premium and recent vehicles fall into this group. Some situations involve a component failure — an immobiliser module, an ignition assembly, a body control module — which is vehicle repair rather than key work.
Which side of that line your vehicle sits on is a question of make, model and year, and it is answerable in a short phone call before anybody commits to anything. That call is worth making even if you eventually go to a dealer, because it costs nothing and it stops you paying for a trip that could never have worked. What you should be suspicious of is anybody who quotes a firm price for a car key without asking what you drive — the year, make, model, and whether any working key exists. Those four facts determine the entire job.
Fob batteries and the failures that pretend to be worse
A meaningful share of "my key has died" calls are a coin cell. Worth ruling out first, since it costs almost nothing.
Signs of a fading fob battery: the remote works only from very close to the vehicle; it works sometimes and not others; the range has been shrinking for weeks; a proximity vehicle intermittently fails to detect the fob and displays a message about the key not being found. Most fobs open with a small slot for a coin or a flat tool, and most take a standard coin cell available anywhere. When replacing one, note the orientation before removing the old cell, avoid touching the faces of the new one more than necessary, and be careful with the small rubber seals and contacts inside — a fob that has been forced open is a fob that will let moisture in, and coastal air is unforgiving.
Also worth knowing: a dead fob battery does not usually strand you. Nearly every proximity fob contains a hidden mechanical blade for the door, and most vehicles have a defined procedure for starting with a dead fob — commonly holding the fob against a specific spot so the vehicle can read it passively. That procedure is in the owner's manual, and reading it once while sitting comfortably at home is a much better time than discovering it in a car park.
Water is the other common killer, and this is a beach town. A fob that has been in the Gulf, in a pool, or through a wash is often recoverable if it is opened, the battery removed immediately, and everything dried thoroughly before power is reapplied — and often not recoverable if it was left switched on to corrode quietly for a week.
Proof of ownership
Nobody makes a key for a vehicle without establishing that the person asking is entitled to it, and that is not an inconvenience to be negotiated. A trade that produces working keys for cars has exactly one thing standing between it and being a theft service, and this is it.
What is normally expected: photo identification, and documentation tying you to the vehicle — title, registration, or insurance in your name matching the vehicle identification number. For a company vehicle, documentation showing the business owns it and that you are authorised. For a vehicle in an estate, the relevant estate paperwork. For a vehicle in a repair shop or storage yard, authorisation from the owner rather than from whoever happens to be holding it.
Some sensible edge cases: the registration is inside the locked car. That is fine and common — identification plus the address and details matching once the vehicle is opened generally resolves it, and it is one reason opening a vehicle and originating a key are treated as two separate decisions. A recently purchased vehicle where the paperwork has not caught up is handled with a bill of sale.
The practical advice is simply to have it ready. Knowing in advance what will be asked turns a five-minute step into a non-event, and it means the work starts sooner.
The spare key argument, one more time
Everything on this page converges on one recommendation, so it is worth stating without hedging.
A vehicle with one key is a vehicle with a single point of failure that fails at the worst available moment — at a beach access, at the end of a shift, on a Sunday, with a car full of people. When it fails, you are buying the expensive version of a job you could have bought cheaply. When it does not fail, you spend years enjoying a saving you never notice.
A spare is cheaper because the vehicle can be told about a new key by a key it already trusts. It is faster for the same reason. It can be scheduled instead of endured. And it means that if a key is lost, damaged, drowned or driven off with by somebody else, the situation is an inconvenience rather than an event.
If your car currently has one key, put it on the list this month. If it has two and one of them is worn to the point where it needs technique, get it cut to code before it takes the ignition lock with it.
